BOISE, Idaho (AP) -- Federal prosecutors have charged a 31-year-old Idaho woman with wire fraud after her Utah-based human egg donation business failed to make payments to egg donors in Missouri.
Janae Helgerson of Boise was arrested Thursday and appeared in U.S. District Court in Boise on Friday in three counts of wire fraud and three counts of making false statements. She is scheduled to appear in federal court in St. Louis on Feb. 17.
Helgerson's business, Mid-West Egg Donation, matched couples seeking to conceive a baby with women who were willing to donate eggs.
Prosecutors allege Helgerson collected payments from the couples, but failed to pay egg donors in the St. Louis area and elsewhere the $4,000 to $5,000 promised to them. Federal prosecutors say the fraud took place between 2006 and 2010.
