(KMOV) – After three days of ice and snow, most everyone returned to work on Thursday, but in some places, the roads were just not ready.
Dozens of viewers complained about roads in Jefferson County and posted their concerns on our News 4 Facebook page.
Interstate 55 is one of the highways that generated a lot of complaints to the Missouri Department of Transportation. Highways south of Barnhart received complaints as well. MoDOT admitted that those highways were not cleaned as well as others.
The inside lane on several highways, including a stretch of I-44, was covered with ice. MoDOT said its salt was ineffective at such low overnight temperatures, but that it is working now.
In some areas, MoDOT also adds black granules called cinders, a byproduct from burning coal that adds traction and helps with melting.
MoDOT says the black cinders don’t hurt cars.
