SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Think your personal information is safe on Facebook? If the answer is yes, maybe you should think again.
Government regulators say the social networking site has often misled its users about how their personal information is used.
The Federal Trade Commission has filed a complaint saying Facebook has exposed details about the lives of its 800 million users without getting the legally required consent.
In some cases, the FTC claims Facebook let potentially sensitive details be passed along to advertisers and software developers prowling for customers.
To keep the matter from escalating in the courts, Facebook has agreed to have the government audit its privacy practices every other year for the next 20 years.
