(BaseballStL) – Cards’ manager Mike Matheny met with reporters this afternoon to offer his thoughts on the 2012 season.

It was a wild season for the rookie manager. Not only did he have the benefit of inheriting the World Series Champions, he had to muddle through the loss of key veterans often at key times of the season.

The 2012 Cardinals saw a steady stream of rookie players making a big impact in high pressure situations. This influx of young talent no doubt required a great deal of the coaching staff’s time and attention.

There was the high of the mad rush for the final wild card spot, the dramatic win over the Braves and even more dramatic win over the Nationals. And of course the crushing low of being shut down by the Giants in the final three games of the NLCS.

When it was all said and done Matheny says the thing he was proud of was how the team never stopped fighting, even when things began to unravel in the NLCS. Matheny told reporters that the team never quit.
