UNIVERSITY CITY, Mo. (KMOV) -- The University City Police Department is bringing in more officers to fight crime.
The city council approved the funding to hire four more officers. A new officer makes $50,000 a year.
University City Police Chief Charles Adams said the additional officers will give the department a total of 79 officers. He said while overall violent crime is down, the city still needs more help.
“....The tasks for police are daunting, so in order to fulfill the tasks you need officers to do that, you need officers to be out there to not only do regular patrol but proactive patrol so there are a lot of needs,” Adams said.
University City has had four murders so far this year.
The chief expects to get about 100 applicants for the four openings.
