ST. LOUIS COUNTY ( -- A St. Louis County college student who attends school in Alabama told News 4 he’s been waiting for an absentee ballot since September.

With the election only two weeks away, he was starting to think his vote wouldn’t count.

So News 4’s Chris Nagus went down to the St. Louis County Election office to find out if this student is alone.

Michelle Washington says her 19-year-old son De’von is eager to vote in his first presidential election, if he gets the chance.

“I’m just concerned about people getting their ballot, that’s all I’m concerned about” said Washington.

De’von told News 4 “they (the election board) tell me my ballot is in the mail, come to find out it hasn’t been processed yet.”

He says he talked to several people and faxed over his request for an absentee ballot weeks ago.

But each day he checks the mail, there’s no ballot.

With time running out, Chris Nagus went straight to the County’s director of elections: former State Senator Rita Heard-Days.

She told News 4 “there are humans working here and sometimes things fall through the cracks.”

But she says it’s rare and she takes these complaints seriously.

Her office has nearly 100 employees working 6 days a week to ensure a fair election.

Nearly 40 thousand voters have requested absentee ballots in St. Louis County so far.

De’von agreed to fax the election office another ballot request.

This time the fax arrived while Nagus was there.

“When he faxed it in just a few minutes ago we received it … that is a guarantee he will cast his ballot and it will be counted” said Heard-Days.

If you need an absentee ballot you need to make that request by the close of business on Wednesday October 31st.
