Hear Ye, Hear Ye, the Rams are in London

LONDON (KMOV) -- The St. Louis Rams arrived in London Tuesday to a bit of a yawn as the NFL continues their attempt to make in-roads into England.  The excitement level does not seem to be here at this point for the game coming up on Sunday despite one of the league’s biggest draws, Tom Brady, making an appearance on the Wembley Stadium “pitch.”

The reason I say that the Rams arrived to a bit of a yawn is that the general vibe I felt Tuesday was one of indifference.  While the Rams were busy at a Play-60 event, I was working on getting some other sights and sounds of London with our photographer Justin Emge.  In talking with people at some of the major tourist destinations here in London the general reaction was somewhere between these two reactions……

“You’re talking about American Football and not English Football (soccer) right?” and “They are playing a game here?”

From what we saw and heard Tuesday, there was just very little if any buzz about this game.  The only semblance of a NFL game coming to town this weekend, was a couple of posters in the Underground System that were promoting a party that the league is holding in Trafalgar Square on Saturday in advance of the game on Sunday.

Now things can change between now and Sunday.  This is a huge metropolitan city with a lot of different things going on, so you have to take that into account.  You also have to take into account that London has no dog in this fight.  If you don’t have a rooting interest in a team you have less care about an event.  But, if the NFL wants to move more games into England and ultimately place a franchise here, it looks like they have a lot more work to do.

Despite the attitudes on the street the coverage was very extensive Tuesday by multiple media outlets here in London and from around Europe.  But the coverage does not seem to match the interest level of the average London resident.

Maybe things will change as the week progresses, but right now the buzz is quiet on the NFL in London front.  We’ll keep an eye on this as the week goes on because the talk of an NFL team, maybe the Rams, in London sure didn’t seem to fit by the reaction on the streets Tuesday.
