WINNSBORO, Louisiana – Authorities say a Louisiana woman set on fire in a city park Sunday night also had her car vandalized with a “KKK” marking.
The victim’s mother said, despite rumors on the Internet, her daughter was not wearing an Obama t-shirt at the time of the crime, reported KSLA.com.
Sharmeka Moffitt, 20, remained in critical condition at LSU Medical Center in Shreveport. Her mother, Edna Moffitt, said surgery was scheduled for Tuesday.
“Both of her arms, and they are third degree burns, down her chest and legs – one,” Moffitt told KSLA. “Basically her arms are real bad.”
Authorities said Sharmeka called 911 around 8 p.m. Sunday from Civitan Park, telling them she had been attacked and burned by three men in white hoodies. Franklin Parish Sheriff Kevin Cobb confirmed that “KKK” was spray-painted on the hood of her car, with a racial slur underneath.
FBI agents are investigating the possibility of classifying the case as a hate crime.
No suspects have been identified.
