CLAYTON, Mo. -- St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch says he is nearly desperate to keep officers who haven’t had a pay raise since 2008. So he’s floating an idea.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Fitch has suggested asking voters to authorize a tax just for police protection. The St. Louis County Board of Police Commissioners has expressed some support, though Commissioner Raymond Wagner warns that voters are getting wary of being asked time and again to raise taxes.
It isn’t clear if or when the idea will make it on a ballot.
Fitch says he is losing personnel to other departments that pay better.
