ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- After a two-foot hole was found in the middle of the Delmar Bridge, the Missouri Department of Transportation has decided to keep the roadway over I-170 closed until it can be replaced over the summer.

While the bridge is closed, drivers can use McKnight and Price roads to detour around the closure.

The department is currently developing plans to accelerate removal and replacement of the bridge.  MoDOT has awarded a contract to Millstone-Bangert, Inc. to replace the bridge.  The work was originally expected to start after Memorial Day and be complete by Sept. 1.

The department is working with companies with utilities on the bridge and with the contractor to determine options.  Those details will be announced when they are finalized.

Crews will be working on the bridge, as previously scheduled, this weekend to place foundation work for the replacement, weather permitting.

Work is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday, April 29, after electric crews reroute power from high voltage lines near the bridge.
