Heavy storms batter St. Louis area

ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Strong storms brought high winds and hail into eastern Missouri, with reports of damage in the St. Louis area.

Lambert Airport reported a tornado near the airport Friday evening, and a police dispatcher for Maryland Heights in suburban St. Louis reported significant damage, possibly from a tornado.

There were also unconfirmed reports of tornados in the Dardenne Prairie and New Melle area of St. Charles County. Residents of Warren County also reported baseball-size hail.

In downtown St. Louis, Busch Stadium officials hurriedly moved several thousand Cardinals fans to a safe area as tornado sirens blared.

Other damage reports include home collapses in the 6000 block of Evergreen Avenue in Wellston as well as on Diane Marie Drive in Maryland Heights.

Also, in Maryland Heights in the 3200 block of Parkwood Lane there is a report of roof damage at a nursing home.

At Interstate 70 and St. Charles Rock Road there are numerous reports of buildings damaged.

The National Weather Service issued several tornado warnings and watches Friday afternoon and evening for a broad swath of eastern and southern Missouri.
