Illinois woman accused of defrauding bank of $4.4 million

EAST ST. LOUIS, Ill. (AP) -- A former worker at a southwestern Illinois bank faces federal charges that accuse her of embezzling $4.4 million.

An indictment returned Wednesday in East St. Louis charges Mary Becker, 56, of Jerseyville with bank fraud dating to 2003.

The court document says Mary Becker worked at Jersey State Bank since 1976, holding positions ranging from assistant cashier to executive vice president. The indictment alleges that Becker inflated expenses and electronically transferred money from the bank's accounts to her own.

Federal prosecutors are trying to seize Becker's home, two condos near Missouri's Lake of the Ozarks, a 38-foot powerboat and various other investments.

The bank's president says Becker resigned in February and no customer accounts have been affected.

Becker hasn't returned a message seeking comment left Thursday at her home.
