(KMOV)-- The police in East St. Louis and other cities are teaming up with federal agents, in a task force, to crack down on thieves, who steal metal from public property.
They are taking everything from copper in lights on public streets, to catalytic converters, even man hole covers.
A man hole cover missing in the center of 14th Street near State in East St. Louis is one of 50 man hole covers missing in East St. Louis.
Members of the task force are trying to crack down on thieves trying to recycle stolen metal .
Managers at top metal buyers, think this crack down will stop those types of thefts.
The mayor of East St. Louis says he hopes the task force will stop thieves who are stealing metals from not just the city, but also from private citizens.
