Possible tornado leaves path of destruction around Girard, Illinois

(KMOV)-- The City of Girard, Illinois was unscatched.  But in the rural area just a mile or so north the property damage was about as bad as it gets.  Mark Prose's home was destroyed with he, his wife and six-and-a-half year old son in the basement.  It only took 15 seconds.  When the family climbed through the rubble to get out, Prose told me his son looked at him and said, "I think it's ruined, Dad."

A few miles away, a woman from St. Louis came to check on the Girard area home where he parents lived.  Her parents were safe somewhere else after their home of 15 years was no more... including the kitchen they finished remodeling less than a month ago.

"Devastation, unbelievable," said Meagen McLean.  "To drive down the road and see all these houses are untouched, it's just amazing how it can hit just one place like this."

Bill Allen was safe in his apartment when the storm hit.  He suffered no damage.  But driving around the area Wednesday, he told me he'd never seen it like this here in his 55 years.

"I feel sorry for these farmers," said Allen.  "This time of year they're trying to get their crops in and now they got all this."

No one was seriously injured in Girard and the whole area lost power from about Tuesday evening to early Wednesday morning.
