ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Missouri shoppers can go green this week with a little help from the state government.
From April 19-25, the Missouri Department of Revenue (DOR) is hosting the third annual Show-Me Green Sales Tax Holiday, an event in which consumers can purchase Energy Star-certified appliances without paying state sales rates on the first $1,500 of each item.
According to the DOR, consumers will save nearly 4.2 percent off their purchase during the holiday.
Any appliance purchased must have the Energy Star label on it.
Clothes washers, refrigerators, freezers, dishwashers, water heaters, furnaces, air conditioners and heat pumps all qualify for the exemption.
Clothes dryers, trash compactors, conventional ovens, ranges, stoves, lighting fixtures, office equipment, home electronics and other non-appliance, however, are not eligible for the sales tax exemption.
In Missouri, nine counties, 43 cities and 14 special districts have opted to participate in the holiday.
Please note: the sales tax exemption only applies to the first $1,500 spent on each appliance. If an appliance costs more than $1,500, then the regular sales tax rate is in effect for any of the purchase price above $1,500.
