URBANA, Ill. (AP) -- The University of Illinois and a union that represents about 800 food and building-service workers have reached a deal on a new contract and averted a strike.
Members of the Service Employees International Union Local 73 on the Urbana-Champaign campus had threatened to strike Monday if the union and university hadn't reached an agreement.
Union organizer Ricky Baldwin says the deal was reached Saturday and approved over the weekend by union members. Negotiations started last summer.
The new contract includes a pay raise of about 3 percent and expires in July 2012.
