ST. CHARLES (KMOV) – Police have a potential lead in the search for a man who tried to rob cleaners but ended up getting stabbed by a clerk in St. Charles on February 8.

The clerk, who did not want to be identified, at First Capitol Cleaners says she could not believe it was a robbery when the suspect announced it…it was her birthday of all days.

She admitted her instinct took over when she realized it was a serious robbery attempt.

“I did not decide.  It was a natural reaction.  I did not take the time to make that choice.  It just happened,” the woman said.

The woman described the man as looking like the Unabomber.  She tells News 4 that she is still shaken by the attempted robbery despite refusing to give-in to a man claiming he had a gun and wanted money.

“I said ‘no’ three times,” the woman said.  “The third time he stuck his hand over the cash register and I punctured the top of his hand with a seam ripper that I had in my hand.”

She chased the man down the street while calling him, but eventually lost track of him.

Would she do it again?

“There was no point where I ever made a choice.  It was just a natural reaction and everything was too fast.  It was kind of crazy so I don’t know if people have a choice.  I don’t know how to answer that,” she said.

Police say they do not recommend doing what she did in that situation.
