(KMOV) -- A massive fire in the Metro East early Thursday morning sent flames streaking about 30-feet into the sky according to our Skyzoom 4 photojournalist Nick Zervos.

A fire captain told me the building at 5th and Madison in Brooklyn was a former barbershop and the owner was renovating it with plans to turn it into a restaurant.

"We tried to go make entry on it," Brooklyn fire captain Johnny Williams told me.  "My guys tanked up, tried to go in, heavy smoke started showing, I pulled them out. Had no choice but to let it go through the roof."

Williams says all signs point to arson.

The building was surrounded by powerlines but firefighters got Ameren Illinois to get the power turned off quickly.  You can see sparks on one of the powerlines in the photos I took from the ground.

The state Fire Marshal's Office will investigate.
