ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – Criminologists at UMSL are studying how St. Louis gang members use social media to broadcast crimes, communicate and taunt rivals.
Researchers say many gang members post pictures of themselves posing with weapons or wearing specific colors. They believe what happens online can easily spill onto the street.
“They have been posting videos – a lot of rap videos, but also videos of activities, street parties and a lot of fights as well,” Beth Huebner, UMSL criminologist, said. “People are organizing fights or telling people where they are or doing surveillance on the internet and things like that so that is a concern.”
Criminologist say what is happening online also provides police with a new investigative tool.
