BELLEVILLE, Ill. (KMOV) – Police in Belleville are increasing the number of drivers they pull over in the city limits. In the last nine months, Belleville Police have stopped 13,000 more people in 2011 than they did in 2010. The increase is not for reaching a quota police say, but to make contact with the community and arrest others who have outstanding warrants or illegal drugs.
Police say they are giving more warnings than tickets, but in the process are arresting criminals who would more than likely continue committing drug crimes.
Residents in Belleville have mixed feelings about the new policy. Some say they’ve been pulled over multiple times and find it frustrating.
Police say what they’re doing is not harassment, they only pull over drivers who have violated a traffic law and not everybody gets a ticket.
