(KMOV.com) A St. Louis City ambulance caught fire outside of St. Mary’s Hospital in Richmond Heights Sunday morning.

After dropping a patient off at the hospital, the ambulance crew came out of the hospital and saw that their ambulance was on fire in the ambulance bay. A Richmond Heights Fire division was passing by the scene after a previous call, saw the smoke coming from the ambulance and swiftly extinguished the fire.

The cause of the fire is currently unknown but is believed to be an engine fire that spread into the cabin of the vehicle, destroying a computer and fax machine.

No medical supplies were damaged in the fire. However, the supplies are no longer usable due to the fire and will be destroyed.

Battalion Chief Ken Smith told News 4’s Ray Preston that the ambulance was damaged beyond repair.

The ambulance crew is expected to resume operation once a reserve vehicle is ready for them. This is expected to be a short time only.
