(KMOV) -- Students at St. Louis University may notice upgrades around campus this year that could make life easier for tens of thousands of people.

Road crews Wednesday morning were putting the finishing touches on a brand-new bike lane and extended sidewalk on Grand between Highway 40 and Lindell.

St. Louis Streets Director Todd Waelterman said walkers, bikers, Metro riders and drivers will notice the improvements because of all the ways to get around in the area.

Waelterman said even though there have not been any major accidents with pedestrians or bicyclists, it was only a matter of time.

“A lot of close calls. And when you drive by here, you’ll see a lot of students in the street because there wasn’t enough safe haven on the sidewalks,” he said. “People are literally skipping with their lives across the street. And that’s what this provides, a nice safe haven for these students to progress up and down.”

This entire project cost $125,000,  $75,000 of which was donated by SLU.
