Alton police raising funds to buy new dog

ALTON, Ill. -- Police in the southwestern Illinois community of Alton are getting help raising money to buy a second police dog.

Alton police officials and the city’s mayor are set to receive about $1,000 from Madison County State’s Attorney Tom Gibbons’ office on Monday. The city’s trying to raise at least $15,000 for the new canine cop by Dec. 1. So far, they’ve raised $10,000.

The city has one police dog, after a second retired and a third had to be euthanized because of illness.

If the fundraising beats the deadline, police can buy the new dog and begin training it by February of next year.

Gibbons says the donation from his office is coming from assets that were seized in federal drug cases.
