Man charged with stealing car from Fairview Heights driveway, leading officers on chase

(KMOV) – A man faces charges for allegedly stealing a car from a driveway and leading police on a chase in Fairview Heights on Tuesday.

Charles Joshway, 43, was charged with two counts of felony burglary.

According to police, Joshway stole a 2004 Dodge Neon SRT from a home on Veach Dr. around 2:50 a.m.

The owner called police, who responded to the scene and broadcast the vehicle description to surrounding agencies.

Authorities said a St. Clair County Sheriff’s Deputy saw Joshway driving the car and attempted to stop him at the intersection of Highway 161 and Highway 159.

Deputies said Joshway refused to stop and after a few blocks he lost control of the car and crashed into the center median. The vehicle went into an embankment before coming to a stop near the Swansea Police Department.

Joshway, who suffered minor injuries in the crash, was arrested at the scene. He was taken to the hospital for treatment and released. He remains in custody at the St. Clair County Jail on a $100,000 bond.

Police said they later determined Joshway was responsible for at least five other car break-ins in the area.
