(BaseballStL) – The Cardinals wasted little time in getting Kolten Wong major league exposure. The club called him up Thursday and he will get his first taste of MLB action Friday against the Cubs.
To make room for the highly-touted infielder, Matt Carpenter has moved to third base and David Freese has been benched. Wong will start at second base- a position he plays exclusively.
Freese has struggled at the plate in the second half, hitting .262 with 13 RBIs and one homer.
July saw him net just 19 hits, though in August he is batting .311 with an OPS of .919.
Wong has played the entirety of 2013 in AAA Memphis, hitting .303 with 10 homers and 45 RBIs in 107 games.
Wong’s OPS is .835, and he’s collected192 total bases in his 412 at bats.
To make room for Wong, Adron Chambers has been optioned back to Memphis- a response to outfielder Shane Robinson being activated Thursday.
Wong will be the 11th player to make his debut for the Cardinals this season.
