EDWARDSVILLE, Ill. -- An off-duty firefighter and a sheriff’s deputy are being credited with rescuing a driver after his car overturned in a water-filled ditch near Southern Illinois University in Edwardsville.
The St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports that Glen Carbon firefighter Steven Slemer and Madison County deputy Timothy Lawrence saved the motorist Thursday by holding the unconscious man’s head above the water. Other bystanders were enlisted to tilt the car enough so the man’s head could remain clear of the water.
The driver, 62-year-old Paul Woods of Glen Carbon, was taken to a St. Louis hospital, where authorities said Friday he was recovering.
Investigators say Wanda reported that he believes he fell asleep while driving.
Authorities say there was no sign of alcohol or drug use.
