(KMOV) – 911 dispatchers foced to evacuate the St. Louis Police Department’s emergency call center recently after an infestation of bugs was discovered last week.

Bed bugs which are known for striking while people sleep, have been found in fire stations, office buildings, kidney dialysis clinics and now at the call center.

Exterminators were called in to dispose of the bugs.

“They hitch a ride in your luggage, clothing, and go wherever you go," said Sarah Meinkoth with Rottler Pest and Lawn Solutions.

When the bed bugs were discovered, the 911 center was cleared out, including 23 employees. They were moved to another location for five hours on Friday but police say 911 service was never interrupted and the building was treated.

Heat is the best treatment plan but that would damage the computers and electronics so exterminators used a chemicals to kill the bugs that can hide in computers. Employees were told to check their homes and wash their clothes and dry them on high heat.

“You might get rid of them at the office then they come back after the treatment and you’ll reintroduce the bed bugs," Meinkoth.

So far no more bed bugs have been spotted at the 911 Center but this is a lesson to others that bed bugs could show up at the office.
