(BaseballStL) -- There will be no September call-up for Cardinals top prospect Oscar Taveras who will undergo a procedure on his ankle next week.
The ankle injury is nothing new for Taveras. He’s landed on the disabled list twice this season because of the recurring soreness in his right ankle.
Derrick Goold of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch reports next week’s procedure is “exploratory” to determine the extent of any damage done to any ligaments or other areas. Afterwards, a timetable will be determined for his return to action.
But the return will not come this September as many hoped.
The Cardinals expect Taveras to be ready for spring training next year and will have a chance to win a spot with the big league club.
In 46 games with Triple-A Memphis this year, Taveras hit .306 (53-for-173) with five home runs and 32 RBI.
