ST. LOUIS (KMOV) – For many, air conditioning is crucial for surviving the heat wave. But thieves who stole units at five homes in one St. Louis neighborhood are making weathering this heat a difficult task.
Demetrius Jones, 29, is facing six felony charges because police say he tried to make a business out of stealing air conditioners. Five of those charges carry a penalty of up to seven years in prison.
According to officials, Jones paid two people $100 in cash to steal air conditioners for him last Monday. They were reportedly putting the units in a U-Haul that Jones rented. These were units Jones planned to resell.
Circuit Attorney Jennifer Joyce says a citizen tipped police to help solve the case.
