(KMOV.com) -- On Wednesday, the Missouri Department of Transportation closed the Jamieson Bridge over Interstate 44 to prepare for the bridge's resurfacing, but detours are creating confusion for motorists.

MoDOT released a statement on Thursday stating the best detour around the Jamieson Avenue bridge construction is I-44 to Hampton Avenue.  Local traffic on the side streets should use the signed detour route, which is Flyer, Watson and Arsenal.  It is not recommended that motorists use Ivanhoe under any circumstances.

According to MoDOT officials, Ivanhoe has become the chosen route of many motorists and is causing a huge traffic mess.  Kara Price with MoDOT said motorists are choosing that route on their own.  According to Price, there are detour signs on Ivanhoe, but that detour is designated for pedestrians only.

MoDOT admits the pedestrian detour signs are odd, but it is the reason motorists are using Ivanhoe instead of other detours.
