(KMOV) – A grizzly bear at the St. Louis Zoo has died from abdominal complications on July 7.
“Ernie” showed a decline in appetite starting in May and specialists were brought in to examine the grizzly bear. The 21-year-old bear continued to lose weight despite medical treatments and special food treats that veterinarians hoped would stimulate the bear’s appetite.
The severe and extensive nature of these changes made it unlikely that the condition could be effectively treated.
“Ernie” and his brother “Bert” were orphaned in Alaska and adopted by the Saint Louis Zoo in 1991. The previous year, their mother had been shot by a state wildlife agent because she was raiding suburban homes near Anchorage.
