(KMOV) – A 57-year-old man and 30-year-old mother of two 18-month-old boys and a 5-month-old baby were arrested for leaving the children unattended in a vehicle in south St. Louis on Sunday.
Police believe the adults left the children unattended with no air conditioning while they ordered food inside a restaurant in the 6400 block of Chippewa around 7:56 p.m. Police arrived to the scene at 8:22 p.m. after witnesses saw the children left unattended in a van at 8:19 p.m.
As police arrived to the scene, they saw the mother entering the driver’s seat of the van. Police then noticed the three children in the back of the van crying and drenched in sweat.
Officers immediately removed the children from the van as they appeared to be dehydrated. The children were taken to an area hospital where they were treated and released to relatives.
The mother and the male present were taken into custody at the scene.
Police called a local meteorologist who notified them the temperature was 95 degrees with a heat index of 113 degrees at the time of the incident.
