(KMOV) – The state of Illinois is attempting to revoke Belleville’s license to operate its only municipal pool after an equipment failure might have caused a bacteria scare last summer.
State officials say Belleville broke the law when it did not close the pool after an equipment failure occurred which could have led to water contamination.
The Belleville Municipal Pool's re-circulation system failed shortly after 43 swimmers got sick from cryptosporidium which may have been connected to the pool problems.
The Illinois Health Department told News 4 that the city of Belleville rejected an offer to avoid having the pool closed.
Eight months later, the city says it was stunned when the state notified them for the first time they had mishandled the situation.
The pool can avoid closing if they make the necessary upgrades, according to state officials.
The Illinois Health Department has scheduled a hearing in Springfield for September 20. The city of Belleville will then know if they will lose its license to operate a pool for up to a year.
