Law requires SIDS training for child care workers

NAPERVILLE, Ill. (AP) -- A newly signed Illinois law requires child care workers who care for infants to get regular training on preventing sudden infant death syndrome.

Gov. Pat Quinn signed the legislation Wednesday in Naperville.

The law requires training at least every three years on the safe sleep recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics.

The doctors group and other experts recommend placing babies on their backs to sleep and removing toys and pillows from cribs. A firm mattress covered by a sheet is recommended.

The new law started as an initiative of SIDS of Illinois, an organization of parents.

Last year, Quinn signed another law requiring hospitals to provide safe sleep information to new parents. That law took effect at the start of this year.
