BROOKLYN, Ill. (KMOV) – A driver died early Wednesday morning after crashing his vehicle during a high speed police chase.

Officials say the Kendell Lewis, 39,  was driving over 100 miles per hour in a Ford ZX3 when he lost control of the vehicle and hit a light pole at St. Clair Avenue and North 18th street.

Lewis’ car also flipped during the collision.

Officers say live electrical wires fell onto the roadway after the driver hit the light pole and that the roadway was shut down.

According to authorities, the chase began at Route 3 and Adams Street when a Brooklyn officer tried to pull the suspect over for speeding.

Police say he initially stopped after being pulled over, but sped away once the officer stepped out of the vehicle before hitting a squad car a few miles down the road.

Lewis was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation is ongoing.
