ST. CLAIR COUNTY, Illinois (KMOV) – A barn fire that broke out in St. Clair County Thursday morning was not started by an arsonist, Marissa Fire Chief Jim Perrine has confirmed.
Firefighters said eight horses were inside the barn when the fire started on Wilke Road in Marissa around 7:30 a.m.
According to firefighters, the blaze was ignited while a homeowner was cutting metal inside the barn.
The barn sustained minor damage, according to Perrine.
The fire happened near the Freeburg area, where at least six arson fires damaged sheds and barns over the past couple of weeks. Two suspects were taken into custody Thursday afternoon in connection with those fires.
