(KMOV) -- There's a Guns and Hoses basketball game benefit this weekend to help Sergeant Rick Lingard.
The 23-year veteran of the St. Louis Police Department was shot in the stomach in late March when two burglars broke into his home while he was getting ready to go to work.
In promoting the event at Harris-Stowe State University Saturday afternoon at 1pm, I talked to Officer Sherri Absher, one of Sgt. Lingard's former trainees.
"He's actually doing very well," Absher told me. "He's very optimistic he's going to make a full recovery just seeing how things go with the therapy and as each doctor visit comes along."
Sgt. Lingard's long-term goal is to get back on the street as a full duty Sergeant.
"He's a great guy and we're sending our thoughts and prayers and supporting him as he makes his way along," says Absher.
