ALTON, Illinois (KMOV.com) -- Detectives are investigating the death of a man who, they say, was shot while in a garage Wednesday morning.

According to police, around 1:40 a.m., they recieved a call about gunshots in the 800 block of Brown Street in Alton, Illinois.  The caller also reported seeing a subject down in a garage behind a house.

When officers arrived on the scene, they found an unresponsive black male on the floor of a detached garage on the property.  Emergency crews responded to the scene, but were unable to revive the victim.  He was pronounced dead on the scene.

Officials said findings from their initial investigation suggested that the victim died from a gunshot wound.  The Alton Police Department's Investigation Bureau was activated and detectives are currently following leads and interviewing witnesses.

An autopsy is scheduled for later Wednesday morning.

Authorities do not have anyone in custody in relation to the case at this time.
