Aerials: Several Highland students injured in school bus crash on I-55

LITCHFIELD, Illinois (KMOV) -- A school bus full of 6th-grade students from Highland was on its way home from a field trip when it collided with a tractor trailer in Litchfield, Illinois on Monday.

Police said it happened on northbound Interstate 55 at mile marker 57, about seven miles north of Litchfield, around 4:30 p.m.

Authorities said the bus was full of 6th-grade students from Grantfork Upper Elementary in the Highland CUSD 5 school district. The students were on their way back from a field trip to the Illinois State Capitol when the wreck occurred, according to officials.

Authorities said one student was airlifted to Cardinal Glennon Hospital with serious injuries. Ten students were transported to the hospital by ambulance. Two of those students suffered serious injuries, officials said.

It is still not clear what caused the wreck.
