Isom plan seeks to keep police on St. Louis streets

ST. LOUIS -- St. Louis Police Chief Dan Isom is pushing a plan to cut the number of police districts and downsize command staff as part of an effort to keep more officers on the street.
Isom told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch that his plan seeks to restore as many as 50 of the perhaps 100 officers who could lose their jobs due to budget cuts.
The chief would combine the Fifth and Eighth districts, which are north and northwest of downtown, because the population and calls for service have dropped drastically. He also would move about 30 officers to the street from desk positions, and eliminate 30 to 50 positions from the rank of sergeant and above.
Isom says the process would be completed by the end of the year.
