ST. LOUIS (KMOV) -- A Washington University student who contracted meningococcal disease, the bacteria responsible for bacterial meningitis, died Wednesday morning at a local hospital.

Emily Benatar, a first-year student from California enrolled in the College of Arts & Sciences, was diagnosed three weeks ago with the disease.  Her family was at her side when she passed away, according to Chancellor Mark S. Wrighton.

Wrighton said the Washington University flag on Brookings Hall will be lowered for the remainder of the week.

Emily’s family has invited the Washington University community to a memorial service at Congregation Beth Am in Los Altos Hills in California at 7 p.m. May 19.

The university is planning a campus memorial service for this fall.

Counseling has been made available through the Habif Health and Wellness Center at (314) 935-6695.
