Woman hit with hammer after confronting burglary suspect in Florissant

FLORISSANT, Missouri (KMOV.com) – An 55-year-old Florissant woman was injured after a man broke into her apartment Wednesday morning and struck her in the head with a hammer.

Police said it happened at the Aspen Woods apartment complex off New Halls Ferry Road just before 3 a.m.

According to reports, a man in his late teens or early 20s broke into the woman’s apartment through an open window.

Police said the woman approached the suspect after waking up. That’s when he struck the woman in the head with a hammer.

"It was a terrible scream," said resident Henry Chandler, who awoke to find his neighbor bloodied and beaten.

The suspect then escaped through the front door of the apartment after the victim fought him off..

The woman was taken to the hospital, where she was treated and released.

"This is one that was truly just a random act of violence and could have turned out worse than it did," Florissant Police Captain Sean Fagan said said.

A K-9 unit was called in to canvas the area to try and pick up the trail of the suspect.

Officials said the apartment complex is in a “gated” community that regulates vehicular traffic, but people are welcome to walk in and out of the area.

Neighbors are frustrated it happened in the first place.  Aspen Woods is a huge complex with more than 300 units.  Renters say they pay $10 extra per month for security.

"We're paying for security, but I don't see any. They don't ride around, they don't check nothin'; they just sit at the gate," Chandler said.  "Anyone can come in, so gated don't [sic] mean anything."

No suspects have been named in the case.  If captured, police said, the suspect will face home invasion and first-degree assault charges.

Anyone with tips that can help police is asked to call them at (314) 831-7000.
