(KMOV) -- Police have charged East Alton man Matthew Lane after he allegedly tried to run over officers in Wood River.
Two detectives spotted an unoccupied stolen Red Chevrolet Cobalt around 10 a.m. Friday morning at Wood River and Harnett Avenues. As the police turned their vehicle around they say Lane, 22, entered the stolen vehicle from Pacific, Missouri.
The officers then blocked the suspect with their vehicle and approached stolen vehicle. Police say Lane drove the car toward the officers.
Police say one officer opened fire, shooting Lane once in the chest.
Lane was taken to an area hospital where he remains stable.
The officer involved has not been identified but detectives say the officer is a 20 year veteran serving at least 10 years with Wood River.
Police charged Lane with one count of attempted first degree murder and one count of offenses related to motor.
His bond was set at $300,000.
