CASEYVILLE, Ill. (KMOV) -- Light poles along Interstate 255 in Illinois between I-55 and I-64 are working again after thieves recently broke into them in order to steal copper wiring. Caseyville police say this has been a consistent problem in Illinois and across the country. When the lights are on, police say the thieves risk electrocution.
IDOT officials say this is very dangerous for drivers merging on and off highways at night when the lights have been vandalized. However, they are in the process of building new lights along the Illinois interstates to help make night driving safer.
IDOT also says it's hard to put a price on tax payers when lights are repaired and replaced since the cost figures are combined.
IDOT has found a way to upgrade the poles to deter thieves, but won't reveal how, hoping thieves will stop stealing the copper.
