(KMOV)—A St. Louis police officer had to be rescued from the Mississippi River after his squad car slid into the water near the Gateway Arch on Friday evening.

According to police, the officer was responding to a call of a driver who was asleep in his van when it began sliding down the cobblestone to the waterline. The van got hung up on some driftwood, stopping it.

The officer arrived on scene but then slid down the cobblestone also, stopping with the squad car  partially in the water

The St. Louis Fire Department responded to the scene and fire crews were able to rescue both driver and officer from the river by throwing a rope down to the victims.

Both were rescued unharmed.
