(KMOV) -- Illinois State Police have determined an alleged roadside attack in Bethalto did not happen on Wednesday night.

Police said a "victim" stated the assault took place around 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday along Route 140, just outside of Bethalto.

According to the victim, the motorist pulled over to help a woman who appeared to be having car troubles.  That's when, police said, two men pulled up.  The men got out of their vehicle and approached the motorist, but it wasn't to help.  The two men started to assault the man in what was reported to be an attempt to steal his vehicle. During the assault, the woman got back in her car and left the scene.

This afternoon, the alleged victim admitted he was involved in an altercation with an acquaintance and made up the story of stopping to help a stranded motorist and being attacked during a robbery.

The victim had minor injuries and was able to drive himself to the hospital.  He has been treated and released.
