WILLIAMSFIELD, Ill. (AP) -- Authorities now say a man who died while deer hunting in western Illinois was shot to death by his father in a likely accident.
Knox County Sheriff David Clague told the The Star Courier in Kewanee (http://bit.ly/A20MhT ) that 34-year-old Steven Hayworth Jr. of Washington died near Williamsfield. The town is 35 miles northwest of Peoria.
Clague said Hayworth was walking about 400 yards ahead of his father, 59-year-old Steven Hayworth, and another hunter trying to flush deer. Two deer ran toward the father who fired. Clague said the shot struck the younger Hayworth in the head.
Clague said the father couldn't have seen his son because of the terrain. The older Hayworth was briefly hospitalized Sunday for unspecified reasons.
Clague said the shooting was almost certainly an accident.
