(KMOV)—Fire crews responded to reports of a fire at a retirement community in St. Charles Monday morning.
Officials said the call came out around 7:45 a.m. to respond to the Lake St. Charles Retirement Community at 45 Honey Locust Lane in St. Charles, Missouri. According to authorities, the fire started in an individual kitchen unit. A female resident, 80, was cooking breakfast and caught something on fire. She attempted to put out the fire herself, but was unsuccessful.
The fire caused the sprinkler system to activate, but it is unclear if firefighters or the sprinkler system extinguished the flames.
The female resident suffered smoke inhalation and was taken to a hospital for treatment. The unit she was living in, as well as a next door nurses unit, suffered water damage.
Fire officials said the fire may have been minor, but two departments were called since the building had a high occupancy.
