Collinsville man pleads guilty in student's death

GRANITE CITY, Ill. (AP) -- A Collinsville man has pleaded guilty in the 2009 shooting death of a Southwestern Illinois College student.

The Belleville News-Democrat reports 19-year-old Javeon Hawkins entered the plea Friday in the December 2009 death of 19-year-old Stephen Nemsky. Nemsky was on his way to pick up a friend in Granite City when he was found dead with a gunshot wound to the neck. Nemsky was studying automotive collision repair at Southwestern Illinois College.

Hawkins was sentenced to 35 years in prison. He has been in custody without bail since his arrest. Another man also is charged in the case and is next due in court March 5.
