ST. LOUIS (Football StL) -- Remember when you were a kid and you entered your model volcano in the science fair? It wasn’t very good but it satisfied the requirements your teacher set forth. Then everyone else did something similar. Some were good. Some not so good.
The best got the big, shiny ribbons for getting 1st place or whatever.
The rest got, well, participation ribbons. Yes. Participation ribbons.
Well, folks. Welcome to the NFL. It’s getting dangerously close to becoming not all that different from the science fair we entered back in the day.
Commissioner Roger Goodell said at the owner’s meetings this week he has discussed the possibility of expanding the playoffs from 12 teams to 14 or even 16.
Think about that for a second. There’s 32 teams in the NFL. If 16 made the postseason that would be HALF of the league moving on. Half.
So, by definition, the most mediocre - i.e. middle of the road - team out there would qualify for the playoffs. Something that is supposed to only be for the best of the best. If this passes, you simply would have to not be terrible. If you’re not bad, you’re good enough to make the postseason.
For the life of me I don’t understand what the point of this is. Well, actually I do. Money. It’s always about money. Everything’s about money. If you let in two or four more teams into the playoffs then there’s be another game or two per conference.
You don’t think the NFL would stand to make a pretty penny from CBS, NBC, FOX or ESPN?
This is just like that whole conference realignment deal in college. Conferences are supposed to be comprised of a bunch of schools that are all in the same geographical area. But because of greed you’ve now got schools with some athletic programs on the west coast of the country and other programs on the east coast. True story.
Playoffs in sports are supposed to be about taking the absolute, very best of the teams in the regular season and having them play for a championship. Now? The regular season wouldn’t mean very much at all and it’d be simply about doing just enough to get into the playoffs.
Because that’s all that would really matter.
